The one tradeoff to know
A monitor reticle draws at the display level, so it shows even in exclusive fullscreen. An app overlay needs borderless or windowed mode. In practice most players already run borderless for alt-tabbing and streaming, so the overlay stays visible while adding everything the monitor cannot do: profiles, animation, and presets.
